Sri Lankan Deputy Minister says police powers cannot be devolved to provinces

June 05, Colombo: Breakaway Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) leader turned deputy minister of the Sri Lankan government, Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan alias Karuna Amman has said the devolution of police powers to the provinces would cause security issues to the government.

Muralitharan has told the local media in an interview that the devolution of police powers to the provinces was therefore not practicable.

He has said that although such a mechanism could be implemented in a geographically large country like India, it could not be applied to Sri Lanka.

According to Muralitharan, in the event police powers were devolved, maintaining law and order and rule of law in some Provincial Councils would be impossibility.
