Sri Lankan government minister says foreign agent within Marxist JVP ranks

Jan 01, Colombo: A breakaway member of Sri Lanka’s Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and current Housing and Construction Minister Wimal Weerawansa says there is a member in the JVP’s Somawansa Amarasinghe faction with strong links to foreign intelligence units.

Weerawansa has said there would be another split in the JVP and that this particular member would be responsible for it.

He has observed that the leader of the current group of dissidents was being manipulated by a foreign intelligence unit.

According to Weerawansa, these forces had worked to oust him from the party in 2008.

The Minister has pointed out that there was still a JVP senior who operates with foreign intelligence units remaining in the Somawansa Amarasinghe faction and that the next split in the party would happen soon.

Weerawansa has noted that JVP Leader Amarasinghe and Secretary Tilvin Silva should work towards safeguarding the party instead of trying to cling to posts in the party.
