Sri Lankan government organizes New Year celebrations for former LTTE members in rehabilitation centers

Apr 14, Colombo: The Sri Lankan government has taken steps to ensure that former LTTE members undergoing rehabilitation be provided with a chance to celebrate the Sinhala and Tamil New Year.

Commissioner General of Rehabilitation Brigadier Sudantha Ranasinghe has said the New Year celebrations will be held in rehabilitation camps island-wide.

According to Brigadier Ranasinghe, the security forces bands have organized musical shows in every rehabilitation center from April 17 as part of the New Year celebrations.

Those undergoing rehabilitation in these centers have also been given the opportunity to spend time with their families.

With the defeat of the LTTE, over 11,000 rebel cadres surrendered to the Sri Lankan security forces. Of them, over 6,000 have been rehabilitated and socialized. The government is hopeful of completing the rehabilitation of the remaining members by the end of this year.
