US$ 523 million foreign investments drawn by Sri Lankan tourism industry

Apr 08, Colombo: The Sri Lanka’s Deputy Economic Development Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena has informed the parliament that foreign companies would invest an estimated US$ 523 million in the country’s tourism industry which include US$ 390 million invested Hong Kong’ Shangri La Group.

Another company based in Hong Kong is to invest US$ 50 million in a hotel project in Katunayake, and three Indian companies are to invest separately in Katunayake, Ratmalana, and Kalpitiya added the Minister.

Two more companies from Singapore and Maldives are to invest in the tourism industry in the Ahungalle in the South and Pasikuda in the East.

Abeywardena has also said that areas such as Vakarai in the Eastern Province, Silavaturai in Mannar and several other areas in the North and East have been identified as tourism zones.
