Sri Lankan government to continue capital city development and beautification programme

Oct 16, Colombo: The Urban Development Authority (UDA) of Sri Lanka is to continue with the Colombo City development and beautification programme despite the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) being won by the main opposition United National Party (UNP).

The UDA has mapped out a series of programmes to be carried out under the development and beautification projects and it has so far picked several programmes like the development of the Beira Lake, Race Course and D. R. Wijewardena Mawatha areas.

According to the UDA, the entire CMC area was under the purview of the Authority.

UDA Director General Nihal Fernando has observed that the entire development and beautification programme had been planned after consultations with the CMC and that it is with the Council’s consent that the programme had been gazetted.

The development and beautification programme is therefore a legal document, he has said.

Fernando has added that the UDA was committed to continue with the development and beautification programme despite the CMC has now been controlled by the opposition.

However, Fernando has explained that there was a provision to make changes and introduce amendments to the existing development and beautification programme of the CMC.

He has said that the changes would have to be made legally and would take time.

The mayor-elect of the CMC A.J.M. Muzammil has said the UNP led Council was prepared to continue with the Colombo City development and beautification programme launched by the Authority.
