Sri Lankan government to re-introduce packing laws for fruits and vegetables on January 15th

Dec 28, Colombo: The government is to gazette an amended version of the law to transport fruits and vegetables in plastic crates in the first week of January, a spokesman of Sri Lanka Ministry of Cooperatives and Internal Trade said.

The government has decided to implement the revised regulations from January 15, the Ministry says.

Following an agreement reached between the framers, traders and the authorities, it has now been decided not to apply the law to fruits and vegetables transported in three wheelers, Land Master tractors, small lorries and busses.

The law is to be applied to all other vehicles transporting fruits and vegetables, especially in large trucks.

The amended law has released the farmer of the regulations and the small vehicles used in transport of vegetables are also free of the plastic crates law according to new gazette.
