Sri Lankan graduates to be recruited as teachers only after serving in difficult areas

Aug 18, Colombo: Education Minister of Sri Lanka Bandula Gunawardena says that graduates and diploma holders would be recruited as teachers only after serving in difficult areas for five years.

Gunawardena has said the service would be mandatory, since there is a shortage of teachers in certain rural areas in the country, especially in the North and East.

He has said that although teachers are scheduled to work in difficult areas for a certain period of time, they manage to get transfers to other areas. According to the Minister, the teachers use loopholes in the system to get transfers to areas they prefer.

Therefore, Gunawardena has noted that graduates or diploma holders passing out from the National Colleges of Education would be recruited as teachers only if they were willing to work in the areas specified by the Ministry for at least five years.
