Sri Lankan President arrives in Maldives for SAARC Summit

Nov 09, Addu City: Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, accompanied by First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa arrived at the Gan International Airport in Addu City of Maldives this morning to participate in the 17th South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) summit.

President of the Republic of Maldives Mohamed Nasheed and First Lady of Maldives Laila Ali Abdulla warmly welcomed the Sri Lankan President and Mrs. Rajapaksa. Sri Lankan High Commissioner to Maldives Dickson Dela was also present at the occasion.

The Sri Lankan President, who is also the current Chairman of SAARC, was accorded with a Maldivian military Guard of Honor.


The two-day Summit starts on Thursday, November 10th in Addu City in Addu Atoll islands. The heads of all eight South Asian nations will be arriving in the island today.

Maldivian President will be hosting a State Banquet for the visiting Heads of States in Hulhu-Meedhoo Thursday.

This year’s summit under the theme “Building Bridges” will concentrate on areas where member countries will benefit by mutual cooperation to better understand the problems faced by member countries in order to reduce the margin of possible conflict.

Sri Lankan President on the margins of the Summit is expected to hold bilateral discussions with the heads of state in the region.
