Sri Lankan President informed of unlawful election campaigning by leading government official

Oct 08, Colombo: Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has been informed of election campaigning work carried out by a senior government official in the Colombo city in violation of election laws.

Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya had informed the President about the matter following a complaint by the main opposition United National Party (UNP).

Deshapriya had reportedly told a top candidate contesting the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) by phone that he had informed the President about the government official’s involvement in the election campaign against election laws.

Meanwhile, senior journalist Lasantha Ruhunage from the Sinhala weekly Ravaya lodged a complaint with the Elections Commissioner against Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa’s involvement in the governing United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) campaign for the CMC.

He has complained that the Defence Secretary had participated in UPFA mayoral candidate for the CMC Milinda Moragoda’s campaign in the Colombo Central area and that he had also addressed the public at a rally.
