Oct 31, Colombo: Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa returned to the country this morning after a successful visit to Australia.
President Rajapaksa left last week to participate in the 22nd Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) that was held from Oct 28-30 in Perth, Australia.
President Rajapaksa on last Thursday (27) delivered the keynote address at the Commonwealth Business Forum on the topic “The Indian Ocean and the Pacific Rim: Fastest Growing Markets”. During his speech, the President urged the advanced economies to quickly and collectively respond to the growing global economic crises.
During the visit the President held discussions with a number of Heads of Government of Commonwealth countries and their representatives.
President Rajapaksa also took the opportunity on the last day of the summit to promote the bid for Hambanthota to hold the Commonwealth Games in 2018.
The visit was a great success for the President as Sri Lanka managed to fend off a failed attempt by certain Commonwealth leaders to prevent Sri Lanka from hosting the 2013 CHOGM.
