Sri Lankan university lecturers threaten union action

Apr 09, Colombo: University lecturers in Sri Lanka have threatened to launch union action by May 9, if the government fails to address their demands including a salary hike.

The Federation of University Teachers Association (FUTA) has said the lecturers would vacate the university administration force by May 9 and abstain from participating in the evaluation process of the 2011 G.C.E. A/L examination.

FUTA Chairman, Dr. Nirmal Ranjith Dewasiri has told the media that Higher Education Minister S.B. Dissanayake has expressed interest in discussing the issues with the lecturers.

Dewasiri has said the lecturers were hopeful of receiving a positive response to the demands.
