Sri Lankan university lecturers to go ahead with planned union action

Apr 18, Colombo: University lecturers in Sri Lanka have decided to continue with their planned union action due to the failure on the part of the government to effectively address their demand for a salary hike.

The Federation of University Teachers Association (FUTA) has said the university lecturers would continue with the decision to abstain from the evaluation of 2011 G.C.E. Advanced Level examination papers.

Representatives of FUTA met with Higher Education Minister S.B. Dissanayake yesterday to discuss and arrive at a consensus with regard to the university lecturers’ demand for a salary hike.

FUTA Chairman Dr. Nirmal Ranjith Dewasiri has said that although Minister Dissanayake had agreed with their demands of a substantial salary hike for academics, they had not received an effective response to their issues.

Dissanayake had asked the FUTA representatives to write to the President requesting for an appointment to discuss the matter.
