Sri Lankan university students protest demanding removal of VC

Dec 07, Colombo: Thousands of students of the Sri Jayewardenepura University in Sri Lanka led a protest march Wednesday demanding the removal of the Vice Chancellor of the University.

The students marched towards the University Grants Commission (UGC) in Colombo today demanding the removal of their Vice Chancellor Dr. N. L. A. Karunaratne.

The students carrying placards and shouting slogans burned an effigy of the Vice Chancellor.

Local media reported heavy traffic jams on the main High Level Road from Nugegoda and around the Town Hall area in Colombo due to the protest march.

Earlier this year the students surrounded the building where Vice Chancellor Dr. N.L.A. Karunaratne was residing to protest against the hid decision to reject the Mahapola scholarships for the students.

Students also allege that the Vice Chancellor make false complaints to the police resulting in the arrest of the students by the police.
