The Government should develop the local agriculture sector to face the future global food crisis, says the Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena.

“We are heading for a food crisis and private and public partnership is important to develop the domestic agriculture sector to face that challenge, “he said at the launch of the “Ag Biz East -2011” rural agriculture trade exhibition in Amapara from 27to 28 May.

This event organized by the National Agribusiness Council (NAC) and supported by the USAID funded Connecting Regional Economics (USAID/CORE) project is endorsed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Production and Development, Rural Industries Development and Fisheries of the Eastern Province.

Abeywardena said modernization of agriculture and to making more viable will encourage youth to do farming for thus private/public partnership projects will be ideal, he said.

Minister Yapa Abeywardena said Ag Biz East 2011 is the second rural Agriculture Trade Exhibition under the “Reawakening east” providing farmers’ ample business opportunities with a medium to long term perspective.

Chairman of Ceylon Chamber of Commerce Dr Anura Ekanayake said the biggest challenge domestic agriculture encountered is that our private sector has not realized the full potential of the agriculture in Sri Lanka.
