* Sri Lanka’s Agriculture Minister says consensus needed on testing agro chemicals

June 24, Colombo: Agriculture Minister of Sri Lanka Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena has said that an agreement is yet to be reached on a common scientific experiment to test agro chemicals that are imported to the country for arsenic.

Abeywardena has said that while university experts have so far given their individual opinion on the matter after conducting different tests, there needed to be a common approach.

According to the Minister, the next step could be taken only when the experts arrive at a consensus on how to carry out the tests.

However, Abeywardena has admitted that initial tests carried out on several agro chemicals had indicated arsenic, but at permissible levels.
