Sri Lanka’s Economic Upliftment programme set sails in the Southern Province

Minister of Economic Development Mr. Basil Rajapakse says the Divi Neguma (the economic upliftment programme) is a project implemented with people’s participation on a massive scale. He points out the results expected from the project can be achieved if the public support is received immensely.

The Minister made these remarks at a meeting held at Siribopura in Hambantota yesterday to create awareness among the district officials on the Divi Neguma project implemented with the objective of setting up one million domestic economic units.

The Minister said that creating a healthy and wealthy family is the objective of the project. He pointed out if three coconut trees are grown on a garden it would pave the way to create 40,000 acres of coconut cultivation.

Mr. Rajapaksa launched the Southern Province “Divi Neguma” programme yesterday with a meeting held at Siri Dhamma Vidyalaya, Labuduwa in Galle, in which the Senior Monisters Mr. Athauda Seneviratne, Mr.A.H.M.Fowzie, Mr. Piyasena Gamage, Ministers and Parliamentarians representing the Galle District, the Chief Minister of the Southern Province Mr. Shan Wijelal de Silva, the Governor of the Southern Province Mrs. Kumari Balasuriya, government officials and a large crowd of Divi Neguma participants attended.

After the meeting, the Minister also inspected the construction being carried out the two storied Galle bus-stand complex, the upper floor of which is being constructed as a modern shopping complex at a cost of Rs. 280 Million. A flyover from the bus stand to the Galle Railway Station will also be constructed.

The launching of the Matara District programme was also carried out yesterday. This function was held at Weligama with the participation of Minister of Agriculture Mr. Mahinda Yapa Abeywardene. The Deputy Minister of Economic Development Mr. Lakshman Yapa Abeywardene, Parliamentarian Mr. Hemal Gunasekera, the Education Minister of the Southern Province, Mr. Chandima Rasaputra, government officials and a large crowd of Divi Neguma participants attended this functon.

The Matara meeting was following by the Hambantota meeting at Singapore Friendship Community Centre which was attended by a large crowd of Divi Neguma participants, government officials and the Parliamentarian of the Hambantota District. There will be 57,600 home garden units established in the Hambantota District representing the 576 Grama Niladhari Divisions in the district.
