Sri Lanka’s Education Minister says 141 schools have not received any Grade 1 applications for 2012

June 08, Colombo: Sri Lanka Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena has said that 141 schools in the country have not received a single application for next year’s Grade 1 admissions.

Gunawardena has added that 2,161 schools have received less than 10 applications.

The Minister had made this comment in response to a question posed by JVP parliamentary group leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake about the government’s proposed 1,000 schools programme.

Gunawardena has said the government has proposed the programme to change the pattern where the popular schools are inundated with applications for Grade I admissions while some others do not receive at least one application.

According to the Minister, the 1,000 new schools that are to be established would help ease the congestion in popular schools.
