* Sri Lanka’s farmer advisers to strike work from July 15

July 04, Colombo: Sri Lanka Agricultural Research and Development Union says that the members of the union will strike work from July 15 unless their demands are granted.

The Union says that 9,600 Agricultural Research and Development officers employed in 440 Centers of Agrarian Services island wide will join the trade union action.

The main demand of the Agricultural Research and Development officers is to provide them with a pension scheme similar to the other public employees.

Agricultural Research and Development officers were appointed originally as farmer advisers in 1995 under the People’s Alliance government led by former President Chandrika Kumaratunga.

The trade union of the Agricultural Research and Development officers say they continuously supported the politics of the ruling party and they have legitimate demands.
