Sri Lanka’s female legislator struck by domestic violence says she will not reconcile with the husband

Mar 25, Colombo: Sri Lanka’s popular television actress turned legislator Upeksha Swarnamalee said in courts today that she had no intention of come to a settlement with her husband.

Swarnamalee, parliamentarian of Gampaha district, made this statement before the Magistrate, Anura Kumara Herath when she and her husband Mahesh Chaminda appeared in the Gangodawila Magistrate Court today.

MP Swarnamalee has lodged a police complaint that she was assaulted by her husband. She was admitted to hospital by her security staff on February 14 with bruises on her face and later she underwent cosmetic surgery.

The MP later told media that she would divorce from her husband of two years.

Swarnamalee entered parliament from the UNP after the last general election and later crossed over to the government last year after supporting the 18th Amendment to the Constitution.
