Sri Lanka’s main opposition UNP complains to police about an electronic media institute

Dec 22, Colombo: Sri Lanka’s main opposition United National Party (UNP) has lodged a complaint with the police against a private media institution and its owner for allegedly instigating people to attack the UNP headquarters at Sirikotha.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is reportedly inquiring into the UNP’s complaint.

Meanwhile, Opposition and UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has said that the media cannot make or break a political party. He told Parliament that the media cannot appoint or remove the leader of a political party.

Mr. Wickremesinghe says an employee at Sirasa Media Network who is trying to attack him earlier worked for him.

If the current trend continues, I will have to seek protection from this House, he stated.

According to Wickremesinghe, he is ready to request a parliamentary select committee if the Maharaja Network wishes to respond.
