Sri Lanka’s major opposition to produce former banker as candidate of Colombo Mayor

May 10, Colombo: Sri Lanka’s major opposition United National Party (UNP) sources say that the party will produce banker turned politician and current parliamentarian Eran Wickramaratne as the party candidate for Colombo Mayor.

Eran Wickramaratne is to resign from the post of national list MP of the UNP soon and he is expected to be substituted by the party international secretary Sagala Ratnayake.

The election for the Colombo Municipal Council is likely to take place in the coming months. Colombo city is a long-time stronghold of the UNP.

Wickramaratne was the former CEO of National Development Bank from 2001 to 2010. He resigned to support the UNP at the 2010 April general election after which he was appointed as a MP from the party’s national list.
