Sri Lanka’s Water Board trade union warns of union action next week

Sept 10, Colombo: A trade union affiliated to Sri Lanka’s National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) has threatened to resort to trade union action on Monday (12) over irregularities in promoting engineering assistants.

The Engineers’ Union of the NWSDB has warned authorities that they would resort to a trade union action unless their demands on the matter received a positive response.

Head of the NWSDB Engineers’ Union, Srilal Gallage observes that the union would resort to strike action if the authorities failed to respond to their demands.

The union has noted that the management was planning on appointing 28 engineering assistants to middle management level violating the accepted norms governing promotions.

The union has called on President Mahinda Rajapaksa to intervene since the NWSDB and Water Supply and Drainage Ministry officials have failed to address the issue.

The union carried out a one-day token strike yesterday (9) to focus attention on their demand and has warned that the engineers would stop overtime duties and doing repairs if their demands were not met.
