Jan 28, Colombo: Environment Minister of Sri Lanka Anura Priyadarshana Yapa says the country’s current excessive consumption of water would make it a highly expensive commodity in the near future.
Yapa has said that water management also plays a key role in bringing about economic progress.
Speaking during an event at the Central Environment Authority (CEA), the Minister has noted that the water wastage recorded in the country was very high mainly due to the subsidized rates for water and it has become a national problem.
He has pointed out that excessive water wastage has been reported from urban areas.
However, the Minister has said that people need to realize the importance of water management and the best way is through awareness.
According to Yapa, protecting the environment and natural resources through awareness would be more effective than by imposing laws and regulations.
