Student protests close Sri Jayawardenapura University of Sri Lanka

Jan 08, Colombo: Administrators of Sri Lanka’s Sri Jayawardenapura University have decided to close all faculties except the Medical Faculty indefinitely until further notice due to the student unrest.

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce and the Faculty of Applied Science have been closed from Sunday, January 08, the University Registrar J. Muththettuwegedara has announced.

The restive situation prevailing in the campus due to the agitations by the students have led the authorities to close the University, the official has said.

The students have staged a Satyagraha demanding the removal of the Vice Chancellor of the University Prof. N.A. L. Karunaratne and the police personnel from the campus.

Meanwhile, two students participating in the Satyagraha have been injured in an attack carried out by an unidentified group Saturday night.
