Train driven without guard causes strike in Sri Lanka

Mar 27, Colombo: Sri Lanka rail commuters were stuck at railway stations this afternoon due to an irresponsible action of an engine driver.

An engine driver has driven an empty power set without a guard from Colombo to Matara today.

Sources said that a delay of a guard due to inadequacy of guards to maintain the services today made the driver to run the train without guard.

The trade union of the railway guards protested the action of the engine driver and walked out for half an hour stopping train operations.

A spokesman for the trade union of the railway guards said that the strike was called off after the railway management promised the union to have a disciplinary investigation regarding the conduct of the engine driver.
