Take a hot air balloon ride over the Colombo’s skyline and watch the city wake up in the morning or cruise over the capital while exchanging wedding vows, Sri Lanka’s sole balloon operator is offering a different twist to well-heeled leisure travellers.
Commercial balloon operator Adventure Asia, plans to offer daily flights in Colombo in November, after an eight-year successful run offering rides across the island’s central towns of Dambulla, Sigiriya and Habarana.
Adventure Asia’s Chief Executive Peter Stewart hopes flights across Colombo can be used for corporate outings, weddings, events and launch parties.
“We want hot air ballooning to evolve from a method of travelling for pleasure to a mode where events can be held,” Stewart said.
Each balloon ride can fit 16 people and the price per flight ranges from $160 to $200 around Colombo.
The company recommends flights withinn two hours of sunrise or sunset, when the winds are calm.
Few locations around Colombo have been earmarked as take-off points including the Open University ground in Nawala. Last Saturday, a test run lifted guests few meters up from the launch site at Water’s Edge, a country club just outside Colombo. The organisers felt the wind condition was unfavourable for a fuller flight planned north east over the skies of Colombo.
Adventure Asia also accomodates charter flights for smaller, exclusive crowds.
In the coming months, the company hopes to revive flights across the southern coastal line.
