Chief suspect of Sri Lanka newspaper editor’s assassination dies of a heart attack

Oct 15, Colombo: Sri Lanka police announced that the chief suspect of the murder of Sunday Leader chief editor Lasantha Wickramathunga died of a heart attack.

The 36-year-old suspect, P. Jesudasan, was undergoing treatment in the 44th ward of the Colombo National Hospital, the hospital sources said.

He was admitted to the hospital on October 13, after he had complained of chest pains when he was produced in Mt. Lavinia Court, Commissioner General of Prisons P.W. Kodippili has said.

The cause for the death has been reported as a heart attack.

Following the murder, the suspect was arrested for allegedly being in possession of Wickramathunga’s mobile phone. The suspect has been in remand for around two years.

Wickramathunga was shot dead by unidentified gunmen who came in four motorcycles at Aththidiya in Dehiwala on January 8, 2009 when he was on his way to work.
