July 02, Kurunegala: The cooperative sector immensely contributes to the per capita income of Sri Lanka at a level between 4,000 -5,000 dollars, Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa said today.
Addressing a function held today at the Welagedera play ground in Kurunegala to mark the one hundredth anniversary celebration of the Cooperative Movement and the International Cooperative Day that falls today, the President said the present government was able to rebuild the cooperatives sector to the path of development of the country.
During the “Isuru Saviya” function the President handed over keys to the 19 house holders of the 100 Cooperative Housing Project. The President also awarded prizes for the best coop and mini coop city.
Cooperatives and Internal Trade Minister Johnston Fernando Deputy Minister Basheer Segu Dawood, Governor of the North Western Province Tissa Balalla, Governor of Central Province Sarath Ekanayaka, and Governor of the North Central Province Karunaratne Divulgane also participated.
