June 09, Colombo: Cooperatives and Internal Trade Minister of Sri Lanka Johnston Fernando has told parliament today that about 75,000 coconuts imported to the country during the last festive season were destroyed on arrival.
Fernando has made this statement in response to a question posed by Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) parliamentary group leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
The Minister has said the coconuts had been destroyed at the harbour on arrival since they were not fit for human consumption.
The government during the December festive season gave permission to import coconuts, chicken and eggs to maintain local market prices.
According to Fernando, the Ministry had imported 490 metric tons of chicken and close to 10 million eggs.
