Dec 31, Colombo: A Sri Lankan court Friday issued a restraining order against a move by Sri Lanka’s main opposition United National Party (UNP) to expel a crossed-over party member.
The Colombo District Court judge Ranjith N. Wathupola issued the restraining order preventing the UNP from expelling MP Mohan Lal Grero who recently crossed over to the government.
Grero has filed a petition against the party’s move to expel him. He has named UNP leader Ranil Wickremasinghe, General Secretary Tissa Attanayake and the working committee as respondents.
The Court has ordered the party not to invoke a resignation letter obtained from the legislator on an earlier occasion.
The Court has postponed the hearing to January 12.
Grero, an educationist turned politician and a devoted UNP loyalist, crossed over to the government last month after voting in favor of the government’s 2012 budget.
