Jan 14, Colombo: The We Are Sri Lankan (WASL) organization led by the dissidents of Sri Lanka’s Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) says the rehabilitated former LTTE members should be given equal rights and not be sidelined.
WASL Convener, Udul Premaratne told ColomboPage that the government was critical of organizations that stood and fought for ethnic harmony.
He said that statement made by some government ministers that their organization is backed by the LTTE was made with the intention of suppressing the movement in its struggle to get the authorities to address the needs of the society.
He denied the accusation that the organization was backed by the LTTE and had links with it.
“We have no such links and will not be involved in any separatist movement,” he said.
However, he noted that the rehabilitated former LTTE members have the right to be treated as any other person in society and to be part of a political movement of their choice.
Premaratne condemned the statement made by Higher Education Minister S.B. Dissanayake on the 11th at the Jaffna University that there were LTTE elements at the university.
“If the government continues to make such statements and sideline some members from society making false allegations it would justify the formation of another separatist movement at some point,” he warned.
