Jan 05, Colombo: Indian Minister of External Affairs S.M. Krishna is scheduled to arrive in Sri Lanka on January 16.
The objective of his visit is to strengthen defence and trade ties between the two countries, reported state radio Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation.
The Indian Minister has said that Sri Lanka is strategically important for security in the Indian Ocean and the island is on a correct path at present. He will meet Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Defense Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, and other leaders.
Sri Lanka’s major Tamil party, the Tamil National Alliance, has also sought a meeting with the Indian Minister, sources say.
Meanwhile, the Sinhala nationalist daily, Divaina, reported today that the purpose of the visit is to discuss the devolution of land and police powers to the Tamil-dominated Northern and Eastern Provinces.
