June 12, Colombo: Former Inspector General of the Sri Lanka Police (IGP) Dr. Mahinda Balasuriya has said he would make a statement about his retirement to the media on Saturday (18).
Balasuriya has said that he would explain the reason for his retirement in the special statement.
The former IGP had made the statement in response to a query by the media on the many stories being circulated about his retirement.
Balasuriya is to officially retire from the police on June 18. His retirement came following a clash between workers of the Katunayake free trade zone (FTZ) and the police that resulted in the death of a FTZ worker.
Since announcing his retirement, Balasuriya has been on leave and the government appointed senior DIG N.K. Illangakoon as the acting IGP.
