Oct 13, Colombo: Sri Lanka police say that an operation is underway to seize unauthorized arms, ammunition and drugs and urge the public to surrender any arms and ammunition they possess illegally.
The Police have sought assistance of Sri Lanka Army to conduct the search and seize operations.
The measure is expected to target the political elite who possess firearms regardless of their political affiliations, sources say.
Politicians’ handling of firearms and having links with the drug trade came to light following the assassination of President’s Director General of Trade Union Affairs and former legislator Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra by the supporters of MP Duminda Silva.
A large haul of illegal firearms were recovered from a supporter of Silva who is also the monitoring MP of the Defense Ministry.
