June 13, Colombo: Residents in an islet of Kalpitiya in Sri Lanka’s North Western coast have commenced to agitate against the construction of a tourism resort under the government’s proposed tourism development programme in Kalpitiya.
People residing in the Mohothuwarama islet have commenced protesting against the construction of a resort, the local media reported.
The residents claim the land being used to construct the resort belongs to a Catholic church.
The government has already leased two islands and plans to lease 10 more iunder the Kalpitiya Integrated Resort Development Project (KITRP).
The main livelihood for the 200 or so residents living in the islet is fishing. However, they protest against the construction of the tourism resort that can provide more employment opportunities.
