Salary demand of Sri Lanka university teachers cannot be granted, says Minister of Higher Education

May 27, Colombo: Sri Lanka Minister of Higher Education S.B. Dissanayake today said that the government could not grant the salary increase demanded by the university teachers.

Addressing a media briefing today, the Minister said that a 140% salary increase could not be granted overnight.

He also said that a salary increase could not be granted halfway through an ongoing budget schedule and the university teachers have to wait for the next budget.

The Minister also said that the government admitted the need of a salary increase for the university teachers as a principle.

The Minister said in the parliament yesterday that the government granted a 36.25% salary increase to the university teachers from the last budget while no salary increase was granted for the other public servants.
