Sri Lanka government takes control of issuing vehicle permits to economic centers

Apr 06, Colombo: Sri Lanka Ministry of Cooperatives and Internal Trade has decided to issue gate passes for vehicles to enter the economic centers instead of the previous practice of employing private sector for the operation.

A Ministry spokesman said that the tender holders pay only a fraction of the income earned from the gate passes to the government. The Ministry expects to collect the gate pass money directly from the vehicle owners.

The Ministry plans to issue gate passes for vehicles through the security division of the Cooperative Wholesale Establishment (CWE).

Vendors point out that the economic centers are invaded by extortionists and racketeers. Reportedly a tense situation prevails in the newly-built Peliyagoda fish market as well since two groups extorting the fish vendors have begun to clash.
