Aug 24, Colombo: Sri Lanka’s main opposition United National Party (UNP) has selected Western Provincial Councilor A. J. M. Muzammil, a close confidante of UNP leader Ranil Wickremasinghe as the party’s mayoral candidate for the upcoming election to the Colombo Municipal Council.
Local media reports quoting party sources said today that a panel chaired by UNP leader Ranil Wickremasinghe and included deputy leaders Karu Jayasuriya and Sajith Premadasa, has selected Muzammil as the party’s candidate.
The pro-reformist group of the party led by deputy leader Sajith Premadasa has earlier nominated the former UNP Minister of Media and Information, Imtiaz Bakeer Markar but he has reportedly refused the offer.
However, UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake has said that mayoral candidates would not be announced until the Nominations Board finalizes nominations for all local government bodies.
The opposition party is to submit its nomination list on Thursday, the last day to submit nominations for the elections to be held in October for the remaining 23 local government bodies.
