Sri Lanka Marxist factions meet separately

Oct 01, Colombo: The leaders of the Somawansa Amarasinghe faction and the leaders of Premakumar Gunarathnam faction of the Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) held discussions separately today, party political sources said.

Somawansa faction met in the party headquarters in Battarmulla while the other faction met in an undisclosed venue in Colombo.

The central committee of the JVP has dividedinto two factions and nearly half of it supporting each group. A recent attempt to summon the party central committee had failed due to lack of quorum.

JVP sources say that there is almost no opportunity of party factions uniting.

Meanwhile, sources say that the Premakumar Gunarathnam faction is planning to resume publishing the Lanka Sunday newspaper that was disrupted this week due to legal actions.
