Oct 18, Colombo: Health Minister of Sri Lanka Maithripala Sirisena has proposed that sports and cultural sections be established at all main hospitals in the country.
Sirisena has decided on this move due to the rapid increase in non-communicable diseases.
The Minister has said that it has been found that exercise and cultural events play a key role in minimizing ailments of the heart, high blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, kidney ailments and even cancer.
Sirisena has pointed out that the government has had to spend a large sum of monies on non-communicable diseases due to their rapid increase and that it has become a financial burden to the state.
He has called for the setting up of these sports and cultural units in hospitals and to assign members of the hospital staff who like sports to manage these units.
