Sri Lanka Navy arrests 16 local fishermen, no confirmation on encounter with Indian fishermen

Oct 09, Trincomalee: Sri Lanka Navy today has arrested 16 local fishermen who had allegedly entered the seas near the Sampur lighthouse and had engaged in fishing activities.

The police say the fishermen arrested with their six boats are residents of Trincomalee.

The suspects have been handed over to the Sampur Police.

Meanwhile, an Indian media report said Sri Lanka navy has attacked over 15 fishermen from Tamil Nadu and chased them away when they were in Indian waters near Kachchatheevu.

However, the Sri Lankan Navy has not confirmed of any such incident taking place.

The PTI report further said that the naval personnel also snapped more than 20 fishing nets of the fishermen.

India’s Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai arrived in Colombo yesterday to specifically discuss the issue of fishermen’s issue.

A joint meeting on the issue that was to be held during his three-day visit has been postponed.
