Sri Lanka Opposition Leader alleges of government trying use EPF and ETF monies through pension scheme

June 08, Colombo: Sri Lanka Opposition and main opposition United National Party (UNP) Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe has said the government was trying to legalize pilfering monies from the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) and Employees’ Trust Fund (ETF) accounts through the propose private sector pension scheme.

He has accused the government of using monies in the EPF and ETF accounts to pay government debt.

Wickremasinghe speaking to a group of members of the UNP affiliated Jathika Sevaka Sangamaya (JSS) has observed that the government would be unable to pay the EPF and ETF of the workers if they requested for the monies in their account.

The government’s proposed private sector scheme came under a barrage of protests from all sectors of employees as well as from opposition parties. The government later abolished the proposed private sector scheme and announced that it would seek suggestions from the workers for a new draft bill.
