Sri Lanka parliament approves defence budget 2012

Dec 19, Colombo: Sri Lanka parliament today approved the 2012 budget for the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development with a majority of 91 votes.

Following the Committee Stage Debate on the Appropriation Bill 2012, the major Tamil party Tamil National Alliance called for a vote on the Head of the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development.

Accordingly the defence budget received 104 votes in favour and 13 against it.

Members of the United National Party and the Democratic National Alliance were not present in the House for the debate.

Budget for Defence and Urban Development Ministry covers the budgets for tri forces -Army, Navy and Air Force, Coast Guard, Police, Department of Immigration and Emigration, Department of Registration of Persons, Department of Coast Conservation, and Department of Civil Security.
