Sri Lanka Police Chief submits report on the attack on Uthayan Editor to the President

Aug 03, Colombo: Sri Lanka’s Police Chief, Inspector General of Police N.K. Illangakoon has submitted an interim report to the President on the attack carried out on the news editor of Uthayan, the Jaffna-based Tamil newspaper, the Indian daily the Hindu reported.

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Sunday ordered the IGP to immediately launch an investigation into the attack on the news editor Gnanasundaram Kuganathan.

An unidentified gang has attacked the Uthayan news editor, Gnanasundaram Kuganathan, with iron bars while he was traveling along the Navalar Road in Jaffna on Friday (July 29) night.

Kuganathan, 55, is in critical condition at the Jaffna Hospital Intensive Care Unit.

The police and security forces have been carrying out mobile patrols in many areas in the North, and following the attack, the mobile patrolling has been increased. However, no arrest has been made yet on the attack.
