Aug 05, Colombo: The constituent parties of Sri Lanka’s ruling party United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) are to hold a special meeting on the 9th of this month to discuss the upcoming third phase of the local government elections.
Local government elections will be held on October 17 for 23 local bodies that were not polled at the last two rounds.
Leaders of all the constituent parties of the UPFA are to attend the meeting on Tuesday and the alliance is expected to field nominations to all the 23 LG bodies.
General Secretary of the UPFA, Minister Susil Premajayantha has said the discussion is organized to take a decision on the candidates who are to be fielded for the local bodies
According to the Minister, applicants of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party are instructed to fill in the applications obtained from the Party Headquarters and hand them over before the 10th of this month and the list of candidates will be finalized after conducting the interviews for the candidates.
The 23 local bodies include 17 municipal councils, one urban council and five Pradeshiya Sabhas. All municipal councils in major cities including Colombo, Dehiwala Mount Lavinia, Gampaha, Negombo, Kandy, Galle, Matara, Hambanthota, Kurunegala, Matale, Badulla, Anuradhapura and Ratnapura are to hold polls.
