Sri Lanka to convert 858 schools in to secondary schools

June 10, Colombo: Sri Lanka Ministry of Education has decided to convert 858 schools as secondary schools.

The Ministry announced that children would not be admitted to Grade 1 of these schools from 2012.

However, the Minister of Education Bandula Gunawardhana said in the parliament recently that the cabinet would remove any school that requested them to be removed from the programme of developing 1,000 secondary schools.

The Minister further said that 141 schools island wide had not received a single application for Grade One and 2,161 schools had less than 10 applications each for Grade One admissions.
