Mar 01, Colombo: The National Trade Union Center (NTUC) affiliated to Sri Lanka’s Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) together with trade unions affiliated to several sectors are to hold a massive protest campaign in Colombo on Monday (5).
The protest would be held as a broad forum seeking relief for masses burdened by price hikes and an increase in the cost of living.
NTUC Head K.D. Lalkantha told ColomboPage that various sectors have agitated separately against price hikes following the massive fuel price hike last month.
“The NTUC will bring all these sectors under one banner and convene a common forum to fight against price hikes and demand relief for these sectors and the people,” he said.
The broad forum is to include representatives from sectors including agriculture, fisheries, tea small holders, estate and also the private sector.
Among the unions that would participate in the broad forum are the Inter Company Employees’ Union, All Ceylon Farmers’ Federation, All Ceylon Estate Workers Union, Joint Federation of Tea Small Holders and the All Ceylon Common Fisheries Federation.
According to Lalkantha, the NTUC is currently engaged in discussions with several other trade unions to form the broad forum.
