Sri Lanka trade unions to collect 6.5 million signatures against private sector pension scheme

May 13, Colombo: Sri Lanka trade unions are aiming to collect 6.5 million signatures from the private sector employees for the petition against the pension scheme proposed by the government for the private sector.

The Inter Company Employees Union (ICEU) has launched a petition and is currently collecting signatures from all parts of the island.

The ICEU has also commenced protests at grassroots level with the first being held at the Liberty Circle in Colpetty in Colombo.

Protest campaigns have also taken place simultaneously at Rajagiriya, Horana, Nawala, Kalutara, and Panadura.

According to ICEU head, Wasantha Samarasinghe, the union has commenced protest campaigns at grassroots level and is to continue with them while simultaneously collecting signatures for the petition against the bill as well.

Samarasinghe says that the unions would hold a mass protest campaign on Monday (16) in Colombo.
