Sri Lankan big onion farmers gain from import tax increases

Aug 22, Colombo: big onion farmers of Sri Lanka say that the increase in import taxes by the government is giving them a good price for their harvest.

The purchasing price of a kilo of big onion is around Rs. 60 to 70, which i seen as a fair price by farmers.

The government last week imposed a Rs. 19 per kilo tax for big onion imports to discourage the influx of cheap products to local market.

The total tax per a kilo of big onion is now Rs. 35 and the imports have been almost stopped due to this tax, market sources say.
