Sept 20, Colombo: Sri Lanka prison authorities have decided to assign prisoners to do agricultural activities in prison lands island wide to provide food crops for their own consumption.
Commissioner General of Prisons P.W. Kodippili has said the prisoners would be used to contribute to the national economy by assigning them to cultivate food crops needed for daily consumption in the prison.
The Commissioner General has already directed the prison authorities in prisons located island wide.
He has added that all prisoners would be assigned to cultivate food crops and land would also be found for prisons that lack land facilities for agriculture.
The Commissioner General says the labour of the prison inmates should be used for constructive purposes when the country is being developed following a war.
